By Zoila Palma: The United States Government issued a statement saying that it condemns the violence perpetrated by terrorist organizations against members of the Guatemalan National Civil Police and in prisons in Guatemala.
“These terrorists, and those who cooperate with or are associated with them, have no place in our hemisphere. The safety of the Guatemalan people and the stability of our hemisphere must prevail,” the statement said.
“We reaffirm our support for Guatemalan security forces in their efforts to stop the violence,” it added.
Guatemala is under a 30-day State of Emergency declared by President Bernardo Arevalo following an eruption of gang violence in which 9 police officers were killed.
