By Zoila Palma: The U.S. and Colombia have reached an agreement on deportations, avoiding a trade war after tensions over Colombia’s refusal to accept military deportation flights, Reuters report.
President Trump had threatened tariffs and sanctions, but on Sunday, the White House announced Colombia would accept deported migrants, including those sent on US military aircraft.
In return, the US has put on hold draft orders for tariffs—up to 50%—and other sanctions, which would have had severe economic consequences for Colombia. The deal also includes a commitment from Colombia to facilitate the return of its citizens.
Colombian officials confirmed the agreement and indicated their readiness to receive deported nationals, but did not specifically confirm military flights.
The trade agreement was crucial for Colombia, which depends on US trade, particularly under a 2006 free trade agreement that resulted in $33.8 billion in trade last year. The US is Colombia’s largest trading partner, while Colombia is the third-largest in Latin America for the US.
Meanwhile, Trump continues his hardline stance on immigration, with military deportation flights and policies to restrict asylum and citizenship for children born in the US.
