International News: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services tightens screening by shortening work permit validity for multiple immigrant categories

By Zoila Palma: Today, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced new policy changes that will significantly shorten the maximum validity period of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for several categories of noncitizens.

The agency said the move—outlined in an updated Policy Manual—aims to strengthen screening and oversight of immigrants working in the United States, following legislative changes enacted earlier this year.

Under the revised policy, many groups that previously received work permits valid for up to five years will now be limited to a maximum of 18 months.

According to USCIS, the shortened validity periods will require more frequent renewal applications, enabling the agency to vet applicants more often and identify potential fraud or security risks.

Director Joseph Edlow linked the policy shift to public safety concerns, citing a recent attack on National Guard members in Washington, D.C. allegedly carried out by a noncitizen admitted under a prior administration.

The changes affect refugees, asylees, individuals granted withholding of removal, people with pending asylum or adjustment-of-status cases, and several other categories beginning December 5, 2025.

Additional adjustments mandated by the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed in July, further limit work permits to no more than one year—or the end of a parole or Temporary Protected Status period—for groups including TPS holders, refugee parolees and spouses of entrepreneur parolees.
