By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Norovirus cases are surging in parts of the U.S., with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting 91 outbreaks during the week of December 5, up from 69 the previous week.
Winter typically sees an uptick in cases due to gatherings and travel, CBS reports.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus causing diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, and fever, often spread through contaminated food, water, or surfaces.
The virus can affect anyone, but young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of dehydration.
There is no specific treatment, but staying hydrated is crucial. Frequent handwashing and avoiding food preparation when sick are key preventive measures.
Norovirus is responsible for 58% of foodborne illnesses in the U.S. annually, with outbreaks most common from November to April.
It causes millions of illnesses each year and can lead to hospitalizations and fatalities, especially among vulnerable populations.
