By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. public health officials have been instructed to stop all collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) effective immediately, AP reports.
A memo from CDC official John Nkengasong directed staff to cease working with the WHO on projects, including technical working groups and advisory boards, and to await further instructions.
The abrupt stoppage has raised concerns, as it will hinder efforts to combat outbreaks like the Marburg virus and mpox in Africa, and disrupt monitoring of threats such as bird flu in U.S. livestock. Experts, including Dr. Jeffrey Klausner from USC, expressed surprise at the suddenness of the order, which had been expected to be part of a gradual withdrawal from the WHO under President Trump’s recent executive order.
The order to withdraw, however, requires congressional approval and a one-year notice period.
The CDC’s halt in cooperation follows a broader freeze in U.S. foreign health spending, including on PEPFAR, a critical HIV/AIDS program.
Critics warn these actions could have deadly consequences for global health.
