By Zoila Palma: The U.S. government is constructing a large new immigration detention facility in west Texas, capable of holding 5,000 single adult immigrants, according to a recent Defense Department contract announcement.
According to AP, the $232 million project was awarded to Acquisition Logistics, a Virginia-based contractor, and will be located in El Paso, near the Fort Bliss Army base.
Described as a “soft-sided facility”—a term often referring to large tent camps—the center marks a significant expansion of federal detention capacity.
The move comes amid President Donald Trump’s renewed focus on mass deportations, backed by a new law allocating $170 billion to border and immigration enforcement, including $45 billion for detention efforts.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is set to see a dramatic funding boost, growing by $76.5 billion over five years.
This development follows recent reports of a similar emergency detention center in Florida, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” built in the Everglades.
Trump has pledged to deport millions of undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S.
