International News: U.S. and Ukraine to resume Peace talks as officials say progress hinges on Russia

By Zoila Palma:  U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they will reconvene today for a third round of talks aimed at advancing a U.S.-brokered peace framework for postwar Ukraine, emphasizing that any real progress depends on Russia’s willingness to de-escalate.

The announcement followed a second day of meetings in Florida, where both sides issued a joint statement outlining broad areas of agreement—including long-term security guarantees and economic recovery plans for Ukraine—while urging Moscow to commit to “serious” steps toward peace.

President Trump’s envoys, including special adviser Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, have been pushing Kyiv and Moscow toward a negotiated resolution to the nearly four-year conflict, CBS reports.

The renewed diplomatic push comes after Witkoff and Kushner met earlier in the week with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.

Senior Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described those talks as “constructive” and said some U.S. proposals appeared “acceptable,” though major gaps remain—particularly on territorial questions.

He noted that Russia had received additional documents expanding on the original 28-point American plan, but cautioned that “we are no closer to resolving the crisis in Ukraine.” Despite Moscow’s guarded optimism, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv remains wary, accusing Putin of stalling while pursuing military gains.

Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers and officials have offered tempered assessments of the diplomatic effort. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called last weekend’s discussions with Ukrainian delegates “very productive,” but acknowledged “a lot of moving parts.”
