By Zoila Palma:  The U.S. and Mexico have reached an agreement to address the spread of the New World screwworm, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced today.

The parasite, which can seriously harm livestock, wildlife, and occasionally humans, prompted the U.S. to threaten livestock import restrictions starting April 30 if Mexico didn’t intensify control measures.

Following pressure from Washington, Mexico committed to strengthening its pest response, including boosting control efforts from its southern border, Reuters report.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the country is ramping up action to stop the spread.

More details on the agreement are expected soon.
