By Zoila Palma: The United States and Mexico have reached an agreement on water deliveries under the 1944 Water Treaty, aimed at easing shortages affecting farmers and ranchers in South Texas.
Under the understanding, Mexico will release 202,000 acre-feet of water to the United States, with deliveries expected to begin during the week of December 15, 2025, Fresh Plaza reports.
The agreement covers both the current five-year cycle and outstanding obligations from the previous cycle.
Both governments acknowledged that Mexico still carries a remaining water deficit from the prior cycle and confirmed that negotiations are ongoing to finalize a longer-term repayment plan by the end of January 2026.
U.S. officials said the agreement is intended to provide greater certainty for agricultural producers in the Rio Grande Valley, where reduced water deliveries in recent years have led to crop losses and economic strain.
A joint communiqué emphasized the importance of complying with treaty obligations, which require Mexico to deliver 1.75 million acre-feet of water to the U.S. over five-year cycles in exchange for U.S. deliveries of Colorado River water to Mexico.
While noting improved water releases by Mexico over the past year, U.S. officials stressed that full compliance remains a priority, adding that both countries will continue working through the International Boundary and Water Commission to improve coordination and water management going forward.
