By Zoila Palma: The United States and China have agreed on a framework deal over TikTok following high-level trade talks in Madrid, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed today.
He said the threat of a U.S. shutdown of the app pushed Chinese negotiators to drop demands for tariff concessions, clearing the way for progress on TikTok’s transition to U.S.-controlled ownership.
Speaking alongside U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Bessent said the agreement balances national security concerns while preserving TikTok’s “Chinese characteristics.”
According to Reuters, specific commercial terms were not disclosed and are expected to be addressed during a call Friday between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump signaled optimism on his Truth Social account, writing that talks had gone “VERY WELL” and that a deal involving a “certain” company beloved by young people was reached.
The negotiations, held at Madrid’s Palacio de Santa Cruz, were the fourth round of discussions in as many months.
They come after both nations raised tariffs and as the U.S. has pressed allies to target Russian oil sales, a move affecting China.
