By Zoila Palma: The United States’ new ambassador to Panama, Kevin Cabrera, vowed Thursday to strengthen bilateral ties while warning of China’s growing presence in the region, calling it a threat to both Panama and the wider hemisphere, Reuters report.
“First among my priorities will be to strengthen our joint work to counter harmful influences in the region, such as that of China,” Ambassador Kevin Cabrera said.
His comments come amid rising tensions between Washington and Panama, and follow President Donald Trump’s recent remarks criticizing Chinese involvement in the Panama Canal.
In response, China’s embassy in Panama rejected the ambassador’s claims as “contrary to basic facts,” defending its cooperation with Panama under the Belt and Road Initiative and denying interference in the canal’s operations.
Panama is also currently investigating a contract awarded to Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison to operate two local ports.
