International News: U.N. says conflicts end when leaders choose dialogue over destruction

By Zoila Palma:  The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres says that “conflicts do not end on their own.

They end when leaders choose dialogue over destruction.

That choice still exists.

And it must be made — now.”

Today, the U.N. Security Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution focusing on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The meeting is to consider a draft resolution on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, amid deep concerns over maritime security and freedom of navigation.

The vote is scheduled to be held hours before an 8 p.m. Eastern deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for Iran to open the strategic waterway or face attacks on its power plants and bridges.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, linking the Gulf to global markets.

Around one-fifth of global oil and a significant share of liquefied natural gas pass through it.

Since hostilities began, ship traffic has dropped sharply, while crude oil prices have surged – hovering around $110 per barrel.

UN agencies warn that disruptions are driving up fuel and fertilizer costs worldwide, with ripple effects on food prices, inflation and economic stability, especially in import-dependent economies and developing countries.
