By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, 2 jets from US airlines were struck by gunfire while flying over Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as the country grapples with escalating gang violence.
A Spirit Airlines flight, en route from Fort Lauderdale to Port-au-Prince, was hit by bullets while attempting to land, injuring one crew member, CNN reports.
The flight was diverted to Santiago, Dominican Republic, where damage consistent with gunfire was found. Spirit suspended all flights to Haiti in response.
Later, a JetBlue flight returning from Haiti to New York was also found to have sustained bullet damage, prompting the airline to extend flight suspensions through December 2.
American Airlines also canceled its flights to Haiti.
The Haitian Civil Aviation Authority announced a temporary suspension of all air traffic at Port-au-Prince’s airport starting at 2 p.m. local time Monday, citing security concerns.
These incidents occurred as Haiti’s new prime minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, was sworn in, pledging to restore security amid ongoing gang violence.
The country has faced a year of political instability and rampant criminal activity, which has recently disrupted international operations, including the targeting of a UN helicopter and US Embassy vehicles.
Fils-Aimé emphasized the need to restore security as a first priority in his address.
