By Zoila Palma: Two pilots were killed and dozens of people injured after an Air Canada aircraft collided with a fire-rescue truck on a runway at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, NBC reports.
The aircraft, operating as Air Canada Flight 8646, had just landed with 72 passengers and four crew members when the incident occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m.
According to preliminary information, the plane struck a Port Authority fire truck that had been cleared to cross the runway while responding to a separate issue involving another flight.
Air traffic control audio recordings indicate a controller initially authorized the vehicle to cross before instructing it to stop moments later. In one recording, a controller is heard acknowledging the error.
Authorities reported that 41 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with some sustaining serious injuries.
As of Monday morning, 32 individuals had been released. Two officers aboard the fire-rescue vehicle suffered broken limbs but were reported to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigations are underway by the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, and the Port Authority.
