By Zoila Palma:  Two men have been rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal after surviving for more than a week trapped underground following catastrophic floods near the country’s border with China. The men were pulled from the Trishuli-3A hydropower plant, nine days after the disaster, as rescue teams continued searching for workers believed to be missing.

One of the survivors, 30-year-old Sanjay Sah, was reported to be in stable condition and had to ask rescuers what date it was after emerging from the tunnel, CNN reports.

Sah said he became trapped after helping others escape and kept himself going by chanting Hindu mantras. The second survivor, 45-year-old Kabir Maharjan, was in critical condition. Both men were airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

The discovery has renewed hopes that other people may still be found alive, although rescuers also recovered the body of a third man at the Trishuli-3A site.

At the Langtang hydropower plant, two additional bodies were recovered from a tunnel, while search and rescue operations continued at several other hydropower facilities affected by the floods.

The Nepali Army said 58 people were rescued today with assistance from seven army aircraft and six civilian aircraft. Teams working at the Chilime plant managed to advance about 100 metres into a tunnel after clearing silt and debris, while operations at Trishuli-3B and Upper Trishuli-1 focused on clearing approximately 700 metres of access routes and pumping water from tunnels.

More than 9,300 Nepali Army personnel have been deployed across flood-hit areas to conduct rescue operations, provide emergency medical care, reopen blocked roads and protect communities.
