By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The U.N. human rights office in Mexico called for greater protection for journalists following the deaths of two reporters in separate incidents.
Mauricio Solís, who ran a Facebook news page covering Michoacán, was shot dead in Uruapan on Tuesday, shortly after interviewing the city’s mayor.
According to the Associated Press, state prosecutors reported that another person was wounded in the shooting. The mayor expressed concern that the attack might be linked to the interview.
Solís is the 5th journalist killed in Mexico this year, with his reporting focusing on local events and drug cartel violence.
His death highlights the dangers faced by self-employed journalists in the country.
Less than 24 hours later, entertainment reporter Patricia Ramírez González, known as Paty Bunbury, was found with serious injuries inside her restaurant in Colima and died at the scene.
Ramírez contributed to a local newspaper and ran a blog on entertainment.
The U.S.-based Committee to Protect Journalists condemned both killings and urged for thorough investigations.
