By Zoila Palma: Two Israeli embassy aides were fatally shot Wednesday night outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., by a gunman who shouted “Free Palestine” after being detained, officials said.
The victims, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, were a young couple planning to get engaged, Reuters report.
Both worked to foster peace between Jews and Arabs and were active in interfaith and peace-building efforts.
Police identified the suspect as Elias Rodriguez, 30, from Chicago. Authorities say he acted alone and had no prior criminal record. He reportedly admitted to the shooting and led officers to the weapon.
The attack comes amid global backlash against Israel’s Gaza offensive and rising antisemitism. Israeli embassies have increased security worldwide.
President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu condemned the attack as antisemitic. Jewish advocacy groups and community leaders expressed grief, warning of growing threats against Jews globally.
The victims were remembered as passionate peace advocates. “They were about to celebrate life together — and instead were murdered,” said Rabbi Levi Shemtov.
