By Zoila Palma: A Chinese Ph.D. student from Wuhan has been arrested for allegedly smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and lying to customs officials, the Department of Justice announced.
Chengxuan Han, a student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is accused of sending concealed biological samples—linked to roundworms—to a University of Michigan lab.
She also allegedly deleted electronic evidence before arriving in the U.S. on a J1 visa and admitted to making false statements during a customs inspection, Fox reports.
In a separate case, another Chinese national, Shenghua Wen, pleaded guilty to smuggling firearms and military equipment to North Korea.
Wen, who overstayed his U.S. student visa, coordinated with North Korean officials to illegally export weapons and ammunition from the U.S. via China.
Authorities said he purchased firearms in Texas and shipped them through California, concealing their true destination.
Both cases come amid increased federal scrutiny of foreign nationals involved in sensitive U.S. research and defense-related smuggling.
