By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican goods has raised concerns about the impact on iconic products like avocados, tequila, and even U.S. consumers.
In western Mexico, avocado growers fear higher prices in the U.S. could reduce demand. Enrique Espinoza, an avocado grower in Michoacán, warned, “When there is an increase in the price for any product, demand declines.”
Tariffs would hit Mexico just as it ships avocados for Super Bowl Sunday, the peak of consumption. José Luis Arroyo Sandoval, an avocado packer, explained that a price increase would make exports less attractive, affecting local jobs, AP reports.
Mexican business leader Gina Diez Barroso noted past chaos when U.S. import inspections halted in 2022, highlighting the strong demand for Mexican avocados.
If Mexico retaliates with its own tariffs, as suggested by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the impact could be severe for both countries.
Even non-traditional Mexican products like trucks could be affected, as 88% of North American pickups come from Mexico, potentially raising prices for U.S. consumers by $3,000.
