By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. faith leaders are grappling with President Trump’s new immigration policies, which allow arrests at churches, schools, and hospitals. Many clergy members vow to continue supporting undocumented immigrants, despite the fear and uncertainty these policies have caused, AP reports.

In Portland, Oregon, Rev. W.J. Mark Knutson plans to offer sanctuary at his church, citing moral duty. In New York, pastors expressed deep concern, with some congregants afraid to attend services due to the threat of deportation.

Rev. Robin Hynicka in Philadelphia emphasized that sanctuary must extend beyond individual cases, reflecting a broader commitment to justice.

The new policy has caused widespread anxiety, with churches and other faith communities exploring ways to resist.

Catholic leaders, like Bishop Mark Seitz, have condemned the policy, warning it erodes trust between faith leaders and their communities.

While some conservative evangelical leaders, like Rev. Robert Jeffress, support the policy, others, such as Brent Leatherwood, argue it creates confusion and fear, potentially discouraging law-abiding immigrants from attending church.
