By Zoila Palma: Constellation Brands, the maker of Modelo and Corona, says President Trump’s immigration crackdown is hurting beer sales—especially among Hispanic consumers, who make up about half of its customer base.
CEO Bill Newlands said social drinking occasions have dropped as Hispanic consumers go out less due to immigration fears, including ICE raids, Yahoo reports.
Beer shipment volumes fell 3.3% last quarter, more than expected.
Despite Modelo Especial remaining the top-selling beer in the U.S., demand is weakening due to fewer social outings and job slowdowns in sectors like construction, where many core consumers work.
Constellation missed Wall Street estimates with $2.52 billion in revenue and $3.22 earnings per share, and reiterated modest growth expectations for beer while forecasting a sharp decline in wine and spirits.
Shares rose 4.5% Wednesday but are down over 20% this year, pressured by shifting consumer habits, immigration policy, and concerns over alcohol’s health impacts.
