By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Donald Trump has secured a decisive victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, overcoming assassination attempts, criminal convictions, and a changing political landscape.
The former president triumphed in key battleground states, ensuring his return to the White House in January, where he will be sworn in as the 47th president.
Trump addressed supporters early Wednesday morning, declaring, “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” as crowds cheered in his signature red MAGA hats, BBC reports.
The victory marked a stunning political comeback since the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots that sought to halt Joe Biden’s certification.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris, who had hoped for her own victory speech, delivered a concession address, urging her supporters to “never give up” and committing to a peaceful transfer of power.
In addition to the presidential win, Republicans have regained control of the U.S. Senate after flipping seats in West Virginia, Ohio, and Montana.
While some House races remain undecided, the GOP is poised to take full control of Congress and the White House come January.
In a statement, former President Bill Clinton and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wished Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance well, adding, “We hope they will govern for all of us.”
