International News: Trump’s crackdown drives Migrants to seek refuge in Mexico

By Zoila Palma: As President Trump’s crackdown on immigration limits U.S. asylum access, many migrants are now turning to Mexico for refuge, AFP reports.

Arianne Dominguez, a 24-year-old Cuban, was among those left with no choice after Trump took office and halted the CBP One app, which had helped process U.S. asylum claims.

Instead, she opted for refuge status in Mexico, joining others from Cuba, Venezuela, and beyond, who are seeking asylum in the country.

The Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) is overwhelmed, with migrants waiting days to begin their applications.

Despite challenges, many, like Venezuelan Juan Carmona, are choosing Mexico over the U.S. due to the difficulty of crossing the border legally. Mexico granted refuge to over 26,800 migrants in 2024, but long lines and overcrowded offices are common.

Trump’s policies, including the reinstatement of the “Remain in Mexico” program, have left many migrants stranded or in limbo.

Cuban migrants like Jose Ricardo Moreno, who lost their U.S. asylum appointments, are now considering Mexico as their best option for safety and stability.

With heightened risks of illegal crossing and the uncertainty of U.S. asylum, more are seeking permits to stay and build a life in Mexico.
