By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering plans to launch operations targeting cocaine facilities and drug trafficking routes inside Venezuela, according to U.S. officials cited by CNN.
The discussions come amid a buildup of American military assets in the Caribbean, including the redeployment of the Navy’s Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group.
The president has also authorized the Central Intelligence Agency to conduct covert operations related to the effort.
While Trump has not yet made a final decision, officials say the administration’s focus is on curbing the flow of narcotics into the United States and increasing pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was indicted in 2020 on federal drug trafficking charges.
The United Nations and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, however, note that Venezuela is not a major cocaine producer, with most coca cultivation occurring in Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia.
Administration sources noted that President Trump has not ruled out diplomatic approaches but is reviewing multiple proposals for potential strikes.
Any military action inside Venezuela would likely require congressional notification or approval.
