By Zoila Palma: On Monday, President Donald Trump called for the immediate evacuation of Tehran, warning Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon” amid escalating strikes between Israel and Iran.
The call came after Israeli forces launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran, including an attack on Iran’s state-run TV building during a live broadcast.
Earlier, Iran fired missiles at Israel, killing at least eight, AP reports.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed the strikes had set Iran’s nuclear program back “years.” Explosions have continued to echo across Tehran.
G7 leaders, meeting in Canada, issued a joint statement urging de-escalation but reaffirmed that Iran must never obtain nuclear arms.
In response to the conflict, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rushed to the White House Situation Room. The U.S. has repositioned warships and aircraft to the region and assisted Israel in intercepting Iranian missiles.
Air travel across the region has been heavily disrupted. Iran and Israel closed key airports, stranding thousands.
Meanwhile, violence spread to Gaza, where at least 34 Palestinians were killed as Israeli troops opened fire near food aid centers.
