By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will double tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Canada, raising them from 25% to 50%, starting Wednesday.
According to NBC, the move follows Ontario’s imposition of a 25% tariff on electricity exported to the U.S.
Trump said he would declare a “national emergency” in the three U.S. states affected by Ontario’s tariff, and also called on Canada to remove its duties on American dairy products.
He warned of further tariff increases on imported cars unless Canada drops other long-standing tariffs.
Trump also suggested that Canada should become the U.S.’s “Fifty-First State” to eliminate tariffs altogether. The U.S.-Canada relationship has soured in Trump’s second term, with escalating trade tensions and public remarks targeting Canada.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford introduced the electricity tariff in retaliation for Trump’s rhetoric, threatening to cut off electricity to U.S. states if tensions rise further. The dispute has affected stock markets, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both falling on Tuesday.
