By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Trump administration has canceled flights for thousands of refugees scheduled to travel to the U.S., following an executive order suspending refugee admissions, CNN reports.
A memo from the State Department informed resettlement partners that all previously booked refugee flights are canceled, and no new travel bookings will be made.
The suspension affects approximately 10,000 refugees from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, and Venezuela.
The order halts case processing and pre-departure activities, leaving refugees in limbo, particularly those whose medical exams or security checks are about to expire. Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders are exempt and can still travel to the U.S.
The suspension comes as part of Trump’s immigration crackdown, citing concerns over the U.S. capacity to absorb refugees.
The move is expected to delay the relocation of refugees already in third-party countries, including those who aided the U.S. in Afghanistan.
Advocacy groups warn that the pause could endanger those who risked their lives for U.S. missions.
