By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation Wednesday banning entry to the U.S. for nationals from 12 countries, citing national security concerns.
The ban imposes full travel restrictions on citizens from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Partial restrictions apply to travelers from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
Exceptions include lawful U.S. residents, current visa holders, and those entering for national interest purposes, CNN reports.
According to a White House official, the Boulder, Colorado antisemitic attack accelerated Trump’s decision to act, though the policy had been under consideration.
The proclamation takes effect June 9. Trump warned additional countries could be added as global threats evolve.
