By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order granting TikTok a 75-day extension to comply with a law requiring the app’s sale or ban in the U.S, the BBC reports.

During this period, the U.S. will not enforce the law, which was passed by Congress and signed by former President Biden.

Trump, speaking in the Oval Office, acknowledged that many wealthy individuals had contacted him about TikTok and explained his change of heart since attempting to ban the app in 2020, joking that it was because he “got to use it.”

He also floated the idea of a 50-50 partnership between the U.S. and ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese owner, though details were unclear.

The extension came after TikTok was briefly unavailable to American users over the weekend, with the law banning it set to take effect.

Despite resuming services, the app was still not available for download from the Apple and Google app stores on Monday.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, had previously ignored the law requiring the sale of its U.S. operations.

Trump’s executive order contrasts with some members of his own party, including Senator Tom Cotton, who has called for harsh penalties against companies facilitating TikTok’s operations.

As the debate over the app continues, several high-profile figures, including Elon Musk and Kevin O’Leary, have expressed interest in acquiring TikTok.
