By Zoila Palma:  U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met face-to-face for the first time on Friday during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, ending a months-long delay in bilateral talks between the neighboring leaders.

The conversation, held at the Kennedy Center alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, centered on preparations for next year’s global tournament, which the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will jointly host, AP reports.

While trade and tariff concerns surfaced in their discussions, immigration — long the most contentious issue in U.S.-Mexico relations under Trump — took a back seat.

Sheinbaum used the meeting to reaffirm Mexico’s concerns over U.S. tariffs, particularly levies on automobiles, steel, and aluminum. After the event, she said the leaders discussed “the great opportunity that the 2026 FIFA World Cup represents” and agreed to continue working through trade differences.

Their talks come as the Trump administration once again scrutinizes the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement ahead of a scheduled review next year, even as Mexico continues to negotiate exemptions from steep import tariffs that threaten key sectors of its economy.

Despite tensions over trade, remittances, and Trump’s expanded deportation operations across U.S. cities, both governments have maintained cooperation in areas such as security and cartel enforcement. Mexico has extradited several high-profile figures to the United States and stepped up efforts against fentanyl production — moves that have eased some U.S. concerns.
