By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Trump administration is working on an asylum agreement with El Salvador that would allow the U.S. to deport non-Salvadoran migrants there, blocking their asylum claims in the U.S. and directing them to seek refuge in El Salvador instead, CBS reports.
This “Safe Third Country” agreement, if finalized, would revive a deal first brokered under Trump’s presidency but terminated by the Biden administration.
The plan could help deport migrants from countries like Venezuela, where deportations are limited.
One proposal includes sending deportation flights to El Salvador with suspected members of the Tren de Aragua gang, a target of Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
El Salvador, led by President Nayib Bukele, has gained U.S. support for its tough anti-gang policies.
Trump has already expanded immigration enforcement, including using military planes for deportations and deploying troops to the southern border.
A Safe Third Country agreement would further strengthen his border control efforts.
Currently, the U.S. has a similar arrangement with Canada, and past deals with Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador were suspended under Biden.
