By Zoila Palma: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Venezuelan airspace will reopen to commercial travel, clearing the way for Americans to visit the country again.
Trump said he informed Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, of the decision and instructed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and U.S. military leaders to take steps to open the airspace by the end of the day.
“American citizens will be very shortly able to go to Venezuela, and they’ll be safe there,” Trump said.
Despite the announcement, the U.S. State Department continued to maintain its highest-level travel advisory for Venezuela, warning Americans not to travel due to risks including wrongful detention, kidnapping and torture.
At least one U.S. airline, however, signaled plans to resume service, AP reports.
American Airlines, which suspended flights to Venezuela in 2019, said it intends to restart direct flights in the coming months pending security assessments and government approvals. The carrier previously operated routes between Miami, Caracas and Maracaibo.
