By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. President Donald Trump, just hours after his second-term inauguration, revoked the Biden administration’s decision to remove Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, Reuters report.
Trump signed an order rescinding Biden’s January 14 move, which aimed to ease sanctions on Cuba amid the country’s release of over 500 prisoners.
Trump’s decision keeps Cuba on the terrorism list, a designation he himself imposed in 2021.
Biden’s rollback of Trump-era policies was part of an effort to ease relations, including measures to prevent lawsuits under the Helms-Burton Act and relax restrictions on Cuban government-linked entities.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel condemned Trump’s move as “mockery and abuse.”
Cuba had started releasing prisoners linked to the 2021 anti-government protests, but it remains unclear whether these releases will continue following Trump’s reversal.
The island continues to face significant economic challenges, exacerbated by the ongoing U.S. embargo.
