By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will begin referring to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” in official U.S. government communications, while rejecting calls for international oversight of the rapidly developing technology.
Trump made the remarks during his address to the United Nations General Assembly today.
Trump argued that the term “artificial” makes the technology sound less capable than it is and said he hoped other countries would adopt the new terminology. He also rejected efforts to establish international controls over AI, describing such proposals as a “globalist scheme” and arguing that the United States should continue developing the technology while addressing problems through existing institutions.
His position comes as a group of more than 20 countries and the European Union called for stronger international cooperation on AI safety. The countries said advanced AI should remain under human direction, oversight and control and raised the possibility of creating an international body to establish and enforce standards.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has separately called for greater cooperation among countries with the most advanced AI capabilities.
