By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that he expects the United States and Cuba to reach an agreement and indicated that military action would not be necessary. “I would say that Cuba and us will make a deal. I don’t think we’ll need the military,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
Trump said the United States wants to help Cuba and “open Cuba up to our people.”
His comments came days after he described Cuba as a failed state during an address to the United Nations General Assembly and said that “freedom will be coming” to the island. The Cuban delegation walked out during his speech.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez later said Cuba remains open to dialogue and commercial and business relations with U.S. companies, while strongly condemning the longstanding U.S. trade embargo.
The United States has maintained the embargo for more than six decades.
