By Zoila Palma: Donald Trump sparked controversy after posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the pope on Truth Social. The photo, shared Friday, shows the president in white papal robes and a mitre, pointing skyward.
The post comes just days before the Vatican begins selecting a successor to Pope Francis, who died on April 21. Earlier in the week, Trump joked he’d like to be pope, calling it his “number one choice,” though he said he had no preferred candidate.
Critics reacted swiftly. Former Democratic candidate Melanie D’Arrigo said, “The guy who broke all Ten Commandments is cosplaying as the next pope,” while Republicans Against Trump called the post “full-on lunacy.”
Trump attended Pope Francis’s funeral last week in what was his first international trip since returning to office. The late pontiff had previously criticized Trump’s border policies, questioning his Christian values.
About 20% of Americans identify as Catholic, and 60% of Catholic voters backed Trump in the last election.
