By Aaron Humes: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in hopes of finding a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Associated Press (AP) reports. Although a date for the meeting has yet to be established, Trump announced via social media that the discussions will take place in Budapest, Hungary.
Following a recent telephone conversation with Putin, Trump expressed optimism about the progress made, stating, “I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.” This meeting will mark the second time Trump and Putin have convened, with their previous encounter in Alaska in August yielding no diplomatic breakthroughs.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming talks, stating on social media, “We are ready!”
Before the direct meeting between Trump and Putin, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead U.S. officials in discussions with Russian representatives next week, although the location of that meeting is still uncertain. The announcement coincided with Trump’s scheduled meeting on Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has been pressuring the U.S. to provide advanced Tomahawk missiles, enabling Ukraine to conduct strikes deeper into Russian territory.
Trump indicated to reporters that he intends to discuss the missile proposals with Putin in an effort to pressure him into ending the conflict. “Do they want to have Tomahawks going in that direction? I don’t think so,” he remarked, emphasizing his belief that dialogue could yield positive results.
As the fragile ceasefire in Gaza is holding, Trump has shifted his focus towards the situation in Ukraine, contemplating the provision of long-range weapons to strengthen Ukraine’s position.
Despite past challenges in securing direct talks between Putin and Zelenskyy, Trump is optimistic, particularly following the recent developments in the Middle East, suggesting they may reopen possibilities for diplomatic progress.
“Interestingly, we made progress today, because of what’s happened in the Middle East,” Trump said, clearly indicating his intention to prioritize ending the war in Ukraine.
The discussions with Zelenskyy on Friday will mark their fourth in-person meeting this year, with the Ukrainian leader expected to press for further sanctions against Russia, an area where Trump has shown some reservations. While Congress has considered various legislative options for imposing tougher sanctions on Moscow, the Trump administration’s broader strategy remains to maintain diplomatic pressure.
