By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump announced a one-month pause on new 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico after an agreement with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, CNBC reports.

In exchange, Mexico will send 10,000 soldiers to its border to combat drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl.

The announcement came after Trump imposed tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China.

Trump confirmed that negotiations on tariffs would be led by U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, alongside Mexican representatives.

Sheinbaum responded to the pause, acknowledging the agreements made during her conversation with Trump, and emphasized the importance of preventing the trafficking of both drugs and weapons. The tariff pause briefly boosted U.S. stock markets after initial declines.
