By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Feb. 28 the launch of “major combat operations” against Iran, as joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeted key military and government sites.
Trump also issued a deadline for Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning that failure to comply would result in expanded attacks on critical infrastructure.
Hours before the deadline, Trump agreed to pause planned bombings for two weeks if Iran reopened the vital shipping route, ABC reports.
Talks between the United States and Iran held in Pakistan ultimately failed to produce a peace agreement. Trump identified Iran’s nuclear program as the main obstacle in negotiations and announced that the U.S. would move forward with a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, set to begin at 10 a.m. ET today.
The development marks a significant escalation in tensions affecting global trade routes.
Meanwhile, Israel has continued its military campaign in Lebanon, carrying out ground operations and strikes against the Iran-backed Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed support for the ceasefire with Iran but clarified that operations in Lebanon would continue, despite objections from Tehran.
In separate developments, Pope Leo XIV responded to criticism from Trump, stating he has “no fear” of the U.S. administration and will continue advocating for peace.
The pope called for an end to global conflict, emphasizing dialogue and reconciliation.
