By Zoila Palma: Kristi Noem, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary under Donald Trump, visited El Salvador’s maximum-security Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) on Wednesday, where she warned migrants not to enter the U.S. illegally.
Speaking in front of incarcerated inmates, she stated, “Do not come to our country illegally. You will be removed and prosecuted.”
According to AFP, the visit highlighted the controversial deportation of 238 Venezuelans to El Salvador, accused of links to the Tren de Aragua criminal gang, which the U.S. has labeled a terrorist organization.
However, many of the deportees and their families deny the allegations.
These deportations occurred despite a U.S. federal judge’s ruling to halt them, though an appeals panel allowed the action to proceed.
Rights groups, including Amnesty International, condemned the mass expulsions, citing human rights concerns and the potential for innocent people to be wrongfully detained. The U.S. government reportedly paid El Salvador around $6 million for the detention.
Noem’s visit is part of a regional tour focused on increasing deportations of violent criminals. She also signed an agreement with El Salvador’s Minister of Justice to enhance cooperation in combating transnational crime.
Critics warn that such U.S.-El Salvador cooperation could reinforce authoritarian practices under President Nayib Bukele, whose crime crackdown has drawn international scrutiny.
