By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: US immigration officers detained several undocumented migrants in a raid on a seafood business in Newark, New Jersey, as President Trump deployed additional troops to the southern border, AFP reports.
The operation, which arrested 538 people nationwide on Thursday, is part of a larger crackdown on immigration, with the White House describing it as the “largest massive deportation operation in history.”
The raid at Ocean Seafood Depot in Newark, a sanctuary city, marked the return of workplace raids suspended under President Biden.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka criticized the operation, stating that ICE agents conducted the raid without a warrant and targeting non-criminal migrants.
Trump’s crackdown also includes threats to cut federal funding for sanctuary cities.
His administration has pledged to resume raids on schools, churches, and hospitals, areas previously off-limits under Biden. The operation follows Trump’s January order to deploy additional troops to the border to combat illegal immigration, as part of his “national emergency” declaration.
Local immigrant advocates say the raids have left communities fearful, with one witness describing ICE agents as heavily armed and blocking off exits during the Newark operation.
