By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Immigration raids expected to target sanctuary cities after President Trump’s inauguration have largely not materialized yet.
However, the administration is laying the groundwork for further immigration actions, NBC reports.
On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it would end a policy that restricted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from arresting undocumented individuals at “sensitive locations” like schools and houses of worship.
The Trump administration stated that this move would allow law enforcement to act more freely, although some religious leaders, like Rev. Beth Brown of Chicago’s Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church, have expressed concern about the impact on immigrant communities.
Additionally, Trump’s administration reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” policy, requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for U.S. immigration hearings.
Mexican officials criticized the move, stating it was not part of an agreement.
While specific locations for ICE raids remain unclear, cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York are among those under consideration.
Trump has also pledged to deport “millions” of immigrants, though significant funding will be needed to carry out such plans, as ICE is currently short $230 million for its operations.
Trump’s Day One executive orders included a national emergency declaration and plans to use military resources to expand detention capacity and assist with deportations.
