By Zoila Palma: On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump convened more than 20 world leaders in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to formalize the first phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, ABC reports.
Attendees included Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, and officials from Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.
Leaders posed for a “Peace 2025” photo before Trump, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani signed the agreement, though the full contents have not yet been made public.
Trump hailed the event as a historic breakthrough, calling it a moment decades in the making.
“This took 3,000 years to get to this point. Can you believe it? And it’s going to hold up too. It’s going to hold up,” he said, adding that the agreement marked a turning point for the region. Earlier in Israel, Trump had declared a “new dawn in the Middle East” during a speech to the Knesset, praising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called Trump Israel’s “greatest friend” ever, even as Netanyahu was absent from the Egypt summit due to a Jewish holiday.
The ceasefire deal coincided with the release of the remaining 20 living Israeli hostages by Hamas and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners by Israel.
Emotional reunions unfolded in Tel Aviv and Gaza, highlighting the human impact of the agreement.
