By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran fails to meet a new deadline to reach an agreement that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions between the two countries escalate sharply.
The ultimatum, set for 8 p.m. in Washington, comes amid ongoing conflict and heightened rhetoric on both sides, AP reports.
Today, Iranian officials called on citizens, particularly young people, to form human chains around power plants to protect critical infrastructure. The appeal follows threats from Trump to target Iran’s energy and transport systems, including power plants and bridges, if maritime traffic through the strategic strait is not restored.
Iran’s president said millions of citizens have volunteered to fight.
At the same time, military activity intensified across the region. Airstrikes struck Iranian infrastructure, including two bridges and a train station, while U.S. forces targeted military sites on Kharg Island, an important oil hub. The island has now been hit twice by American strikes.
Iran has also launched attacks on Israel and Saudi Arabia, contributing to wider regional instability.
Saudi authorities reported intercepting missiles and drones, and temporarily closed a key causeway linking the kingdom to Bahrain.
Israel, meanwhile, confirmed strikes on Iranian petrochemical facilities and issued warnings suggesting further attacks on rail networks.
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis are ongoing, but uncertainty remains.
Iran has rejected the latest U.S. proposal, though indirect talks continue with mediators from Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey attempting to broker a compromise before the deadline.
International leaders, including the United Nations secretary-general and France’s foreign minister, have warned that targeting civilian infrastructure could violate international law and trigger broader escalation.
