By Zoila Palma: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose a new 100% tariff on all imports from China, effective November 1, CNBC reports.
The tariff, which will apply “over and above any tariff that they are currently paying,” comes alongside new export controls on “any and all critical software.” The measures mark the latest escalation in tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade and technology.
The decision follows China’s recent announcement of strict export controls on rare earth minerals — a move that Trump described as “an extraordinarily aggressive position on trade.”
China produces roughly 70% of the world’s rare earth minerals, which are vital to industries such as electric vehicles, defense, and semiconductors. In a Truth Social post, Trump accused China of devising “a plan years ago” to dominate global trade through resource control, calling the new restrictions “a moral disgrace in dealing with other nations.”
The U.S. president said the new tariffs and export controls are meant to counter China’s “unheard of” restrictions, which will require foreign companies to obtain licenses to export goods containing more than 0.1% of Chinese-sourced rare earths or technology beginning December 1.
Trump also hinted that he may cancel his planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, citing China’s “hostile letter to the world.”
Nearly all Chinese goods entering the U.S. already face steep duties, with effective tariff rates averaging around 40%, according to Wells Fargo Economics and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
