By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump has sent envoy Richard Grenell to Venezuela to demand that President Nicolas Maduro accept the unconditional return of deported Venezuelans, including criminals and gang members, or face repercussions, AFP reports.
Grenell’s visit to Caracas comes as the Trump administration intensifies its stance on immigration and Venezuela.
The envoy is pushing for repatriation flights, particularly for members of the Tren de Aragua criminal gang, which the U.S. has designated as a terrorist group.
Special Envoy Mauricio Claver-Carone emphasized that Maduro must comply with the demand to take back Venezuelan criminals and release American hostages without conditions.
Venezuela’s communication minister confirmed that Maduro agreed to meet with Grenell but indicated that no agreements were expected.
The meeting marks one of the first high-level discussions between the Trump administration and a government it considers hostile since taking office.
Trump has made deporting undocumented immigrants a priority, recently ending protections for over 600,000 Venezuelans in the U.S. and pushing Latin American countries to accept deportees.
