By Zoila Palma: A senior Trump administration official revealed Thursday that Ukraine had been warned before President Donald Trump ordered a pause in U.S. military aid and intelligence sharing.
According to the Associated Press, the pause came after a tense Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy for not showing enough gratitude for U.S. support.
Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, said the pause was a necessary response to Ukraine’s actions, likening it to “hitting a mule with a two-by-four” to get attention.
Kellogg also clarified that the meeting had been intended to finalize a critical minerals deal that would benefit both countries, but tensions arose when Zelenskyy pressed Trump for stronger security guarantees, which were not forthcoming.
Despite the rift, Zelenskyy expressed regret over the heated exchange and confirmed he was ready to sign the agreement. Trump, speaking to reporters, suggested that both Ukraine and Russia would soon seek peace, though he didn’t provide specifics.
Zelenskyy is set to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman next week, with talks expected to continue in the kingdom. The U.S. hopes the minerals deal will strengthen ties with Ukraine, while also providing a strategic advantage over Russia. However, it remains unclear whether the suspension of U.S. aid will be lifted, as Kellogg emphasized the need for Ukraine to demonstrate cooperation.
The suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine could significantly hinder the country’s defense capabilities against Russian aggression, with experts warning it could lead to intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians and military targets.
