By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump sparked outrage at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday after calling climate change “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.”
Speaking before leaders from small island nations already facing rising seas and others enduring deadly floods, hurricanes, and heat waves, Trump dismissed scientific consensus and accused global institutions of promoting what he labeled a “green scam.”
His remarks came as many world leaders warned of the escalating human and economic costs of climate disasters, AP reports.
Trump, a longtime critic of renewable energy and international climate agreements, doubled down on his opposition to green policies, describing wind and solar as “pathetic” and “too weak” to power modern economies.
Leaders from climate-vulnerable nations swiftly condemned Trump’s dismissal. Ilana Seid, Palau’s ambassador and head of the small island states organization, said refusing to act on climate change is “a betrayal of the most vulnerable.”
Evans Davie Njewa of Malawi warned that Trump’s stance endangers lives worldwide, while Bahamian climate scientist Adelle Thomas, a vice chair of the UN climate panel, recalled experiencing the devastation firsthand when Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012.
“The evidence is not abstract,” Thomas said. “It is lived, it is deadly, and it demands urgent action.”
