By Zoila Palma: On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump declared the Israel-Hamas war officially over marking a historic milestone with the release of the remaining Israeli hostages from Gaza and over 1,900 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
Speaking to the Israeli parliament, Trump hailed the moment as the start of a “grand concord of lasting harmony” in the region and framed it as the end of decades of terror and violence.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his commitment to peace, thanking Trump for a proposal that he said achieved key objectives and brought hostages home.
Following the announcement, Trump flew to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to co-chair a peace summit where the ceasefire agreement was formally signed alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
According to ABC, experts warn that the hardest work lies ahead. While the first phase of Trump’s 20-point peace plan—including hostage and prisoner releases—has been executed, agreements on the most contentious issues remain unresolved.
These include the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, disarming Hamas, and transferring governance to an international trusteeship.
Former counterterrorism official Javid Ali emphasized that implementing demilitarization and verifying compliance will take time, noting historical precedents like the IRA in Northern Ireland and Colombia’s FARC, which took years to fully adhere to peace agreements.
Tensions already surfaced shortly after the announcement.
The Hostage Families Forum accused Hamas of failing to release the remains of all hostages who perished in captivity, while both Hamas and Israeli forces reported ceasefire violations on Tuesday, including exchanges of fire that left five Palestinians dead.
Analysts warn that such incidents highlight the fragility of the agreement and the need for strict adherence by both sides.
Andrew Miller of the Center for American Progress noted that the international community is unlikely to support a resumption of hostilities now that hostages have been freed.
