By Zoila Palma: U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a sharply critical speech at the United Nations General Assembly focusing on migration, climate change, and his grievances with the organization.
Opening with a note that his teleprompter was broken, Trump used the address to lecture other nations on immigration, warning that lax controls were destroying Western heritage and urging countries, particularly in Europe, to follow his approach of strict border enforcement.
According to CNN, the president also denounced climate change initiatives as “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” claiming that green energy policies harm developed nations while benefiting polluting countries.
While Trump reserved much of his criticism for the UN and foreign policies, he offered limited new proposals on ongoing conflicts.
The wars in Ukraine and Gaza received only passing mention during his speech, though on the sidelines he suggested Ukraine could potentially reclaim all its lost territory with European and NATO support.
Observers noted that the largely silent audience contrasted sharply with the laughter and reactions he drew from delegates in his first term, signaling a more sober reception to his remarks.
Trump also used technical malfunctions—the broken teleprompter and a faulty escalator—as metaphors for his broader critique of the United Nations.
He questioned the organization’s effectiveness, arguing that the UN often issues “strongly worded letters” without enforcing meaningful action.
